Windows 7 RC1 is available for download starting today.

One customer has already tested his EZGUI apps on the last beta version and so far things look good.

Is anyone else doing any testing of their software on Windows 7 ?

Do you plan on downloading this current version ?

I am interested in any feedback on using EZGUI on Windows 7.

Windows 7 (pro version) will come with Windows Virtual PC, running a real copy of Windows XP.

Home users will have to download the XP virtual environment (a big download too).

My impression is that for Windows 7 to use a virtual copy of XP, for backward compatibility of XP applications, MS must be expecting Windows 7 to "break" a lot of XP software. This will be called the XP mode.

Now of they expect XP software to break, imagine what this means for software designed for Windows 98 or ME.

Now if EZGUI apps can run flawlessly on Windows 7, without the need for the XP mode, then this will mean your apps will be Windows 7 ready already.

I need to know what works and what doesn't with EZGUI.

Like I said, one user has already tested his software on the Windows 7 beta and he says it works fine (his software uses a lot of graphics and ownerdraw too).

Chris,

The XP virtual machine mode is included to support old software, mostly for businesses, that have legacy applications. Windows 7 does not support 16 bit software at all and businesses still have a lot of legacy systems with 16 bit code (VB3, VB4, DOS, etc...). Instead of having Windows 7 support 16 bit, they included a virtual XP to run this software. A good move I think and about time.

I don't think Windows 7 will break 32 bit software anymore than Windows Vista did in terms of PBWin/EZGUI apps. Only testing will prove this, but if it does it most likely is due to a bug in the backward compatibility. MS isn't trying to break all applications.

I think you will find vitualizaation will be the new way to provide backward compatibility with future versions of Windows. Windows 8 will have a virtual machine of 7.

So the XP mode is more for support of legacy apps, like 16 bit, rather than to solve problems with aps written for XP.

Interesting.

Yes, it is a very interesting way to keep compatibility and remove the bloat from the new OS.

Business requested support for these legacy apps written 10-15 years ago. The developers are long retired or moved on. Business aren't going to rewrite these apps just to purchase the latest OS. Without support for these legacy apps MS would not sell Win7 to business. If not sold to business, it will not sell to consumers.

Also, MS could not break a large number of XP applications. If they did, and XP virtual mode was required on a lot of apps? Why not just stick with XP.
