Chris,

After making lots and lots of designer changes, I decided I wanted to start all over from scratch, so I renamed my working folder then created a new project.

I copied all my old forms into a new working directory, then opened them one at a time (would be nice to have multiple select here). I had to copy in some graphics which I understand, but on a couple of forms, the designer keeps asking for the background bitmap over and over and over and over... actually, on the 3rd browse-for-file control the designer simply locks up and I have to kill the task in order to recover (which fails to save any forms I've added to that point). I can't find anything particular about these two forms, but there seems to be no possible way to open them up.

On a side note, when the need happens for locating bitmaps, icons, etc. Do you think you could make the starting location 'sticky'. I really don't think many of us put these items in the EZGUI directory which is where the browse function always defaults to. It would be nice if it remembered my last location choice.

Thanks

If you plan on moving projects around, the best place to put all the forms and graphics are in the same folder as the project file itself. The designer will always check the projects folder for files it can't find at the defined path.

I do though need to make the designer smarter as far as file paths.

Chris,

That's pretty much what I was doing, sort of.

I copied the forms that I wanted in a new project into a new folder, then went into the designer and created a new project in that same folder. I then opened each of the forms to add to the project.

One of the things I was trying to accomplish was re-organizing some resource folders, so the designer couldn't find all the icons, bitmaps, etc in the old location. Most of the time this worked just fine but every-so-often the designer simply wouldn't open the selected bitmap and required a forces end-task to get out. The Browse-for-file dialog would open and the resource it was looking for was properly displayed, and I could navigate the directory structure, but when I selected the proper file, the Designer just did do anything further. It didn't lock up, it just didn't accept any file I clicked on. I couldn't [X] out of the Browse-for-file dialog or close it in any way, shape, or form. It seems like the designer was not "getting" the file selection and it wasn't going to go any further until it got what it expected.

I finally had to totally rebuild the form from memory as there was no way to get the designer to open this form. Perhaps it was corrupted somehow, I honestly don't know. I can't imaging these series of circumstances happening very often, but I thought I'd report the bug in case you wanted to look into it.

One suggestion that may help when moving a project, while you don't have direct access to the filenames in FMZ files (except by changing them in a controls property dialog), you can easily access a project file (PRZ) to modify the paths of forms and resources.

The PRZ file is simply a text file and can be edited in notepad. Don't change the syntax of the data in the file, but you can change the paths of any filenames.

I'm not really sure you're understanding my point here Chris

The process of creating a new project with some of the old forms works just fine, I didn't have any problem with 36 of the 38 forms I have.

There were just 2 forms that cause the designer to stop working. The bitmap that these two have is the exact same bitmap used on a 2 dozen other forms. Same with the tool bar and a couple of icons.

Someplace in the process of the designer asking to located these items, it doesn't appear to be getting a value back from the 'browse-for-file' common control so it refuses to go any further. Once this happens you can't get of of the program. Clicking 'cancel' doesn't get the common control to close. Clicking [X] doesn't close the BFF common control. The designer is patiently waiting for me to select a file name but when I click the files in question, the common control must be sending a null string back because the designer doesn't react to my selection.

I don't know if this is an issue with the form specifically, or after X number of forms get opened, or what, but it happened about 5 times during the process of adding these 30+ forms to the new project. I finally got smart and saved the project after each successful form was added so I didn't have to go back again after killing the task.

Some of the forms that gave me problems were just fine the second time I tried. 1 of them simply would not be moved to the new project. Could be it has something against me personally, but its hard to tell. You know some of these forms have a mind of their own

Joe,

You can email me the problem form files so I can test them to see if there is anything unique to them that causes the problem.

Some questions that need to be asked are:

(1) What control types unique to these forms are using a bitmap or icon?

All times are EST (US)
